A BIT ABOUT THIS CLASS
At 6:30 AM last Friday, Anna (our special Ukrainian guest) asked to cancel our meeting because her hometown was under attack and she wasn't sure her family was safe. Two hours later, she received word that her family was hidden in a root cellar (where as a child she used to fetch her grandmother's pickles) and by 10 AM we were discussing ways we could share her country's food, culture, and heart. Anna's family is still sheltered in Ukraine and she remains inspired to do everything she can to support her people.
With your donation, you’ll get access to make these dark cherry dumplings, or varenyky.
A note from Anna on this special recipe: “When I was growing up in southern Ukraine, there were sour cherry trees in nearly every backyard. It breaks my heart to even think that those trees might be destroyed by the war that came to my country. When I moved to California I couldn’t find my beloved sour cherries at any of the local farmers’ markets. I still can’t figure out why more people don’t grow this marvelous stone fruit. But ever since I’ve been making my childhood favorite
cherry dumplings with fresh sweet cherries in summer, and thawed frozen sweet dark cherries when the fresh ones are offseason. Fortunately, these dumplings can be made with frozen stone fruits. I’m happy to share the recipe with you and cook them together to support #cookforukraine. In our family, we usually eat these lovely sweet dumplings for lunch or early dinner.”
A BIT ABOUT ANNA
Anna was born and raised in Ukraine and lived there for twenty years before moving to the United States in 2011.
After coming to the Bay Area, she started working as a food photographer and stylist, helping chefs and culinary brands tell their stories through her camera lens. After numerous photoshoots, Anna unveiled her own food-making talents by hosting Eastern European pop-up dinners. Her Georgian khachapuri dinners and Ukrainian varenyky feasts became sensations in the San Francisco culinary community.
Now Anna’s goal is to make people fall in love with Ukrainian food through every little dumpling, fluffy garlic pampushki, and bowls of luscious borscht. Find Anna on Instagram @annavoloshynacooks.
