Your mint doesn’t have to die— use this trick to keep it fresh!
Those little clamshells of herbs seem to be the #1 thing that have to get composted before I can use ‘em all up. Anybody else?! It’s like I buy one, use ¼ of it for the thing I bought it for, and then the rest of it just settles in and prepares for inevitable wilting.
And of course, growing your own herbs sounds like the most obvious solution. Trim off what you need, and then let Mother Nature replenish. But I know that’s not always realistic.
So I wanted to share with you this little trick Jen taught me (from her bartending days). There really is a correct way to store mint and it will stay fresher longer than you’d ever imagine.
And fresh mint is one of the best to keep on hand because it goes so well with sweet and savory, food, and drink! A few of my favorite uses: Rub some leaves and add them to hot water for a homemade tea, steep them in simple syrup for cocktails or lemonade, chop ‘em up and add them to a fresh salsa or grain salad. Also, if I get overly excited for my dinner and end up uncomfortably full, chewing on a fresh mint leaf helps with digestion!
Mint to be,
