Entertainment and libations wrapped into one! This Christmassy Old Fashioned ‘tis but the worth of a moment. A few party tricks (smoked rosemary branches, and walnut-stuffed dates) add to the festivity and are easier to execute than first-glance might suggest.
This recipe was created by our in-house cocktail guru Jennifer Caballero. You’ll find the ingredients we used below, but supplement with things you have on-hand (like regular simple syrup vs. date syrup)

FOOD LA LA RECIPE: The Christmas Old Fashioned
Ingredients:
Garnishes:
2 sprigs of rosemary
1 date
1-2 walnuts
1 large piece lemon peel
Optional: powdered sugar
Liquid:
2-4 dashes of black walnut bitters
2-4 dashes of lemon bitters
1-2 spoons of date simple syrup (we used Just Date Syrup)
2oz Syrah vodka (we used Hangar1)
Steps:
Garnish Steps:
Before crafting your cocktail, torch one sprig of rosemary (a kitchen torch makes this easy!) then place in your cocktail glass and put something over top to trap the smoke and add a smoky flavor to the glass. Set aside.
To prepare the date garnish, slice the date in half lengthwise and remove the pit. With the flat side of your knife, crush the walnuts then use to stuff the date. Take the other piece of rosemary and stab it through the date. If you want it to look “snowy” add a light dusting of powdered sugar on top! Set aside.
Cocktail Steps:
In a large mixing glass or shaker, add all liquid ingredients. Stir before adding ice so the date syrup can dissolve. Fill with ice then stir until cocktail is chilled.
Pour into the smoked cocktail glass and add rosemary date sprig to garnish.
Twist lemon peel over top to express its oils then drop into cocktail. Serve and enjoy!
