Cinnamon Sugar Sweet Hearts

A week before V-day, I present:  a DIY Valentine treat made with four ingredients I almost guarantee are already in your kitchen.

It’s like an elephant ear—ya know, a buttery, sugary, buttery, buttery, doughy piece of goodness that’s typically the size of your head—but a little easier to make, and a lot better for you.  AND it’s guaranteed to delight your sweetheart (whoever that may be).

Enjoy these for Valentine’s breakfast, or sneak a few into a bagged lunch. To make this even healthier, choose a raw or organic sugar instead of plain white sugar.

Food La La Recipe: Cinnamon Sugar Sweet Hearts

Ingredients:

  • 4 flour tortillas

  • 1/3 cup sugar (raw, coconut, or white)

  • 1 TBS cinnamon

  • 2 TBS coconut oil

  • 1 TBS melted butter (or more coconut oil)

Steps:

  1. Gently fold tortillas in half (don’t crease though) and cut out heart shape with clean scissors.  Repeat with all tortillas (varied sizes are fun!).

  2. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and mix together.  Set aside.

  3. Heat coconut oil in cast iron pan on high until melted and almost smoking.

  4. Put one heart in and let fry for about 30 seconds, then use tongs to flip and fry the second for 30 seconds.  Remove and set on a paper towel.

  5. Repeat with remaining hearts (as you fry more hearts, the oil will get hotter and they’ll brown faster so don’t walk away!).  Add more coconut oil to the pan if necessary.

  6. Brush hearts with melted butter or coconut oil, then sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar.
